Bonnie Heiskell Peters began significant history projects upon her retirement in 1990 and was appointed Union County Historian in February of 1994. She grew up in Union County and became a career federal employee. She spent most of her career in intergovernmental relations, coordinating federal projects with state and local governments and with the President's Office of Management and Budget. She also served as TVA liaison with the U.S. Agency for International Development for TVA's work in third world countries. Bonnie managed the TVA Employee Suggestion Program for 34,000 employees. Educated at Strayer College and The University of Tennessee, she holds a B.S. degree in Education and CPS certification. She has numerous professional and community affiliations, founded Adopt-A-Spot (a Beautification Program (1982)), and she has served on several boards, among them, are Friends of the Maynardville Public Library; the Knoxville YWCA and Fountainhead Conservatory of Music Board of Directors; Union County Historical Society, Union County Business and Professional Association; Knoxville Friends of the Library, Knoxville Dulcimer Club, the Southern Regional Steering Committee, Child Welfare League of America, Florence Crittenton Agency, United Way, and Tennessee's Bicentennial Committee. National endeavors are Tennessee Civil War Preservation Association and Union County Cemeteries Association.
